The Owls Symphony
Description:
The Owls Symphony is a semi-abstract, art nouveau, magical realism style oil painting of a white owl with a flower meadow behind her. It is 36x30x1.5 inches. The Owl is a white barn owl and she glides over the meadow in that mysterious way that owls do. There are sinuous lines of white energy flowing out from her which echo the movements she is making with her silent wings. She is a beautiful predator. The background is blurred and hints at a summer meadow with wildflowers and trees at the edge of the field. The owl is painted in thick paint to further emphasize the contrast between her and the background. She appears to float on the canvas in an act of classic owl gracefulness. The Thin Place Beckons
Description:
The Thin Place Beckons is a very large semi-abstract original oil painting showing deer gathering beyond a lake in a heart shaped forest at twilight. It is 48x48x1.5 inches. It was made with liberal amounts of white, golden yellow, peach and purple paint with cyan blue for accent. The inspiration was the definition of the word âthin placeâ which is a Celtic expression for a place that stands between two universes. This is an idea I have always loved and the deer appear often in my paintings as in other folklore they are regarded as harbingers or guides between worlds. Because the paint is multilayered and oil colours do change quite dramatically in different light, (something that delighted me when I saw it in this painting), it will go from muted neutral colours to luminous sunset ones at different times of the day. I am satisfied I caught some of the magic I was trying to catch in this painting and hope that whoever buys it will have magic too. Tiger in the Ether
Description:
Tiger in the Ether is a 40x40x1.5 inches purple oil painting of a semi-abstract art-nouveau style tiger against an abstract background. The style is slightly art nouveau and makes use of the complementary colours of purple with yellow and orange with blue which makes the colours very vibrant and almost mystical. The background hints at trees and light behind them but is quite abstract. The tiger herself has a pensive expression and looks kinder than most tigers. She appears to be dissolving into the ether (ether being a spiritual idea) and has sparkles of light or energy flowing out from her. In reality, tigers really are in danger of dissolving out of existence so the message is quite poignant. Divine Monarchs is a large semi-abstract wildlife painting of two deer
Description:
Divine Monarchs is a large semi-abstract wildlife painting of two deer in a bluebell wood in springtime. It is 48x48x1.5 inches. The painting was inspired by the months of April and May when the woodlands become carpeted in bluebells. I rarely spot deer in the forests as deer hide expertly, but in springtime it is easier to see them against the blues, lilacs and pinks of the flowers. I began the painting thinking to make a traditional portrait of a stag and a doe but found it impossible. Deer are just too ethereal and I am too inclined to try and capture the spirit of them rather than the anatomical accuracies - so this is what happened. The painting shimmers with the life and energy of the universe under trees and I have made the most of the interplay between sun and shade by contrasting the blue and lilacs of the shadows against the yellows, pinks and greens of the sun dappled scene. Description:
I was mesmerised by the sea from the back of a boat. This painting depicts my experience of this watching the land move away as we came home. There is a little silver leaf underpinning this oil painting, so it looks different depending on the light, thereby adding to the sense of movement in the painting.
