The Autumn Portal is a large otherworldly oil painting of an autumn forest path being revealed though a veil. It is 60x36x1.5 inches. The painting is large enough so that when you stand before it you are drawn along the path until it descends serenely into the distance. Anything you can dream of could be just round that bend. The trees on each side are in autumn colours of orange, magentas, yellows and greens. Some are defined and some are almost abstract. Shades of violet and faded purples play off against the vivid yellows. A low November sun sends beams of light through from the right casting tree shadows across the path and into the deeper woodland on the left. There is a mystery to the painting and the inference is that there is a portal here that may lead elsewhere. It was inspired by recent walks by the Ashdown Forest in East Sussex where Autumn of 2025 was especially vibrant and almost fairy tale in in nature’s last big statement of the year. Farewell Swallows is a large original oil painting of two swallows in a semi-abstract English countryside landscape. It is 36x36x1.5 inches. The painting shows a tree lined country lane with a hint of the landscape in the far distance that the road is travelling to. The sun is filtering through the trees from the left casting dappled shadows on the track. Two swallows have burst through the trees moving impossibly fast as swallows do. The painting is an actual place in East Sussex. I took a walk there in September where I watched the swallows fattening up on insects in midair just prior to their long trip south. The lane goes down to the Ouse river valley and gentle hills around Lewes. To the right, if you were standing in this exact spot, you would see Seaford Head on the English south coast and Lewes castle off to the left. I painted the scene deliberately recognizable and yet a little odd as this better reflects the beautiful timelessness and otherworldliness of some of the areas I walk in. Stag in the Ether is one of a series of semi-abstract paintings of a red deer stag. It is 30x30x1.5 inches. The stag himself is painted in cool blues and purples and is seem emerging out of the ether from a warm red and orange background. The inspiration for this painting is simply an expression of the fascination I have for deer. They are often very elegant and appear and disappear at will which is why in folklore they are often portrayed as guides to the spirit world or to another universe. A nice idea I think! Autumn Beckons is an expressive, semi-abstract original oil painting of an Autumn path. It is 36x36x1.5 inches. The painting focuses on the centre of the painting where light is radiating out beneath the trees. It hints at revelation or hope or some kind of promise – or at least that is what it says to me! The painting was inspired by actual autumn walks in an around the Ashdown Forest (of Winnie the Pooh fame) and the Weald of Sussex where there are plenty of woodlands and copses and nooks and crannies that I never tire of exploring in different seasons. Summer Spirit is an hazy abstract landscape oil painting that hints of a shadowy late summer meadow and trees. It is 36x24x1.5 inches. A transparent swallow can be seen to the right and behind her you can see the suggestion of out of focus flowers, trees and a meadow. It captures a moment from a summer walk in Mayfield – made from memory which retains the feel of it more that the accuracy of the meadow I was in. The colours range through violet, green, yellow, pink and blue. The aim of this painting was to express the sensation of looking at a landscape with eyes partly shut. The swallow is the spirit of summer as they come to the UK during summertime and represent summer to me. Summer Dance is a semi-abstract, art-nouveau style oil painting of a summer meadow with swallows dancing over it and forming patterns in the landscape. It is 24x18x1.5 inches. The painting was made after much walking around in meadows in Sussex during June and July watching swallows swooping and diving for the insects that gather over the wild flowers and trees. Swallows move so fast they are hard to keep track of and they tend leave patterns on the eyes (mine anyway) which adds to the feeling of energy that I tried to capture in this painting. An Awakening is an original oil painting of a female deer in a landscape of lakes, mountains and forests. It is 36x30x1.5 inches. The painting is in semi-abstract, art nouveau and totally unique in style. A female fallow deer stands to the left having emerged from the trees with the hint of a lake and mountains beyond her. Vertical layering of transparent golden paint glazes makes the scene shimmer and reflect different colours when viewed at different angles which gives it a jewel like quality. The deer looks as if she is wondering about her life. A nice idea, although she is probably just wondering what to eat next, but I liked the idea that she could dream as humans do (and how do we know she can’t?...) Echoes of Summer is an expressive art nouveau style oil painting showing the echoes of swallows in the corner of a meadow. It is 35.5x47x0.5 inches (120x90x1.5cm) semi abstract, decorative and vibrantly coloured. The painting shows elegantly placed trees and flowers with the outlines of swallows diving over them. It is called echoes of summer as this is what swallows are in the UK as they only spend their summer’s here before returning to Africa or Europe. I am always sad to see them go as it means the fragrant heady summer days of birdsong and insect buzzing are over far too soon! Finding a Melody is a vibrantly coloured abstract style oil painting in magical realism style. It is 40x30x1.5inches. The overlapping layers of paint and glazes give this painting an energy and movement which reveals different colours and aspects as the light around it changes. I felt I could hear music as a painted it and it does actually remind me of sheet music – hence the title! Although it stands between abstract and realism, it is still a woodland scene with trees and flowers and a stream or pond hinted at. A small deer stag can be seen watching from the other side of the stream. The colours are placed so that they will complement each other and the vertical lines give the feel of something transcending.
