The Mother Tree
Description:
The Mother Tree is a very large, impasto, semi-abstract oil painting of a tree in a bluebell wood with deer. It is 60x36x1.5 inches. A Mother tree is a matriarch tree in any woodland that is connected to all the others. I came across this one in April 2025 and she was massive and very old and was clearly the queen of that particular patch of woodland. She was on a mound with a stream running past in a hollow glade with other trees all around. The bluebells were coming out and the whole space was a universe quite separate in atmosphere to the path that led in and out of it. I stayed a while in this magical space and it impressed me enough to paint this tree and to try and capture the size and majesty of it. Beneath the tree is a small white deer buck and on the left of the painting, silhouetted against the light, are three female deer. The colours are very pale, muted and neutral with grey, lilac, green and blue shades that reflect differently throughout the day as the light hits from different angles giving the painting a slightly ethereal feeling. New Beginnings
Description:
New Beginnings is an original oil painting in an ethereal semi-abstract style of a roebuck deer in a woodland glade. It is 36x36x1.5inches. The painting is vibrant and multi-coloured and hints at trees and leaves and dappled light in a spring forest. The roebuck is only half formed and it watching the viewer haughtily as roe deer tend to. Three shapes towards the centre of the canvas form tenuous portals or openings that could lead elsewhere. This painting was inspired by that exact idea. Often, especially in the ancient woodland copses of Sussex, I feel I could turn a corner and be in a whole new world. I like the idea â especially when I find a deer watching me (which is quite often in southern England). Anyone who walks in woodland will know the thrill of looking out from the trees to a clearing or a path beyond and that is the wonder of woodland and possibly one of the reasons so many fairy stories and folklore are founded in forests. The Eldritch Hart
Description:
The Eldritch Hart is a large original oil painting of a frosty January morning in England with a lone deer hart watching from the shadows of the path. It is a 48x36x1.5 inches oil on canvas. It is semi-abstract and unique in style and seems to shimmer between reality and abstract. The painting was inspired by a walk I took in the Lewes, South Downs area of England in January 2025. The frost made the colours muted yellows, purples, blues and browns. The day felt magical and full of the promise of spring to come. Nature held in suspension and only the birds were active (they start to sing again in January as soon as the days start to get longer). I did see deer on this walk and they never fail to make me happy. I have tried to not only capture the colours and temperature and details of this landscape, such as the low sun through the trees and the bare trees and frosty fields, but also the energy and feeling of it. The Wild Wild Wood
Description:
The Wild Wild Wood is a semi abstract, art nouveau style painting of an autumn wood and a deer buck. It is 40x40 inches. The painting shows the view through trees on a path in a wood. There are a myriad of vibrant autumn colours and the patterns and curves created by the tree branches are quite art-nouveau in effect. There is a fallow deer buck emerging from branches and the hint of a path and other trees and a clearing beyond. I have tried to express the energy and colour explosion of a woodland by using just enough realism to show what the idea is. And the idea is how much there is to look at in a wood and how this can be expressed without painting every leaf and twig! The painting was inspired by many walks in ancient woodland and the thrill I get whenever I spot deer. Even though it is common to spot them, I still love these creatures and feel they are the real owners of trees and forests and should be respected. Under Sea Rebel
Description:
Under Sea Rebel is a large blue and turquoise underwater seascape painting of a queen angel fish in a pristine Caribbean Sea. It is 40x40x1.5 inches. The fish swims along intent on her goal and above her you can see the swirling surface of the rippling waves. Below her are the patterns of light that reflect from their motion across a sandy seabed. Behind the fish is the darker blue of deeper water in the distance. This painting was inspired by a recent Aruba holiday where I often saw this actual fish swimming around a particular jetty. I like the idea of the freedom she had if she could only continue to escape the tourists and fishermen. This is another in a series of underwater paintings inspired by the sheer beauty of a blue sea and the fish that live in it. Summer Fading
Description:
Summer Fading is a golden green abstract landscape with a white egret beside a small river with pink wildflowers. It is 40x40x1.5 inches. A white egret can be seen on the left rising out of the hidden river she was fishing in. Behind her are pink riverside flowers and beyond those you can see the glow of a golden field and shimmering trees. In the foreground you can see abstracted lines of an emerald green field. This is an actual moment of time I painted recently where I came across a startled egret by a small river. You canât see the river because of the angle but you can see the bird stretching her wings to fly out of it. The background is a golden green which helps to give this sultry abstract landscape an end of the summer type feeling â hence the title. I like to capture moments of time in natureâs cycles and this is a tiny snapshot of a little drama I enjoyed. The Spell Caster
Description:
The Spell Caster is a warm, colourful autumn woodland path semi-abstract painting with barn owl. It is 30x30x1.5 inches. The painting is mostly orange and purple and though is clearly of woodland, it is built up with many transparent layers of rainbow colours and vertical marks and drips that give the painting the idea of it flickering in and out of a different reality. I find woodland magical and I find owls magical and I love autumn so this is the combination of those things. It was mostly inspired by some of areas of woodland around the Ashdown Forest in Sussex where you can go quite suddenly from a sunlight heathland into dark and sinister patches of dark forest. Follow the Dream

A golden, vibrantly coloured panoramic oil painting of the path through an ancient woodland in autumn. 40x16x1.5 inches. The painting technique is blurred and impasto and has a golden glow to it that changes throughout the day depending on the light. This painting almost vibrates with the promise of good things around the next bend. The inspiration was lots of woodland walks taken in autumn in the East Sussex area where the paths through the trees are often well worn and very old. Many were droversâ paths used for herding animals and the echoes of the past are very strong in some of them. I tried to capture the feeling of anticipation and hope of revelation that I often get when around trees and ancient forests. Somewhere in an Autumn Clearing
Description:
This oil painting is 40x40x1.5 inches and shows a glowing autumn landscape with two swallows playing in a clearing. It is semi abstract in style and painted using techniques that allow the viewer a glimpse of a little magical universe. The energy and the drama of an autumn clearing and trees is shown in the flow lines and blurred edges and other whimsical flourishes. The colours range through purple, blue, magenta, orange and golden yellow. The Thin Place Beckons
Description:
The Thin Place Beckons is a very large semi-abstract original oil painting showing deer gathering beyond a lake in a heart shaped forest at twilight. It is 48x48x1.5 inches. It was made with liberal amounts of white, golden yellow, peach and purple paint with cyan blue for accent. The inspiration was the definition of the word âthin placeâ which is a Celtic expression for a place that stands between two universes. This is an idea I have always loved and the deer appear often in my paintings as in other folklore they are regarded as harbingers or guides between worlds. Because the paint is multilayered and oil colours do change quite dramatically in different light, (something that delighted me when I saw it in this painting), it will go from muted neutral colours to luminous sunset ones at different times of the day. I am satisfied I caught some of the magic I was trying to catch in this painting and hope that whoever buys it will have magic too.
