Stormy sea at Flamborough
Description:
Flamborough is a small town on the Yorkshire coast near the more well known holiday destination of Bridlington. The headland in the distance is called Flamborough Head and contains in it many of my favourite coastal scenes like those of Selwicks Bay. The remaining cliffs are called Bempton Cliffs which is well known to birders as they are a popular nesting site for a variety of sea birds mainly Gannets. This painting captures the area on a stormy day in Winter.

The Calf Rock afternoon in early Autumn (2015
Description:
Again another painting of the Calf Rock viewed again from the base of the larger Cow Rock. In the distance is the Cow and Calf Inn where many of the tourists to Ilkey Moor stay during their visit. I used a bit of what they call "artistic license" and did not include in the painting the large car park which is situated between the inn and the rock. I thought it didn't "fit" and was unpainterly.

Portrait of Gail
Description:
This is a portrait of my friend Gail which she commissioned me to paint for her. It stands proudly on the a wall in her house and is much admired by her family. I have included it in this gallery as I feel it to be a good example (along with the other two) of my technique in painting portraits. If you would like to commission me to paint a portrait please be advised that it will be done in the same manner (using prime colours and white only) as this one and the other two in this gallery.

Waterlilies (after Monet (2014)
Description:
This is the first of my Monet versions. I painted it because an artist friend of mine was convinced that not only could I paint them, but also sell them on line. This idea never came to fruition, but because I enjoyed painting versions of Monet's originals I painted many more, but keep them for myself, but as I have Mentioned before I will gladly paint another if you want.

Impression sunrise (after Monet) (2018)
Description:
Yet another Monet version. This painting gave the Impressionists their name. The painting was exhibited by Monet at the Impressionist's(then called the "society of anonymous artists") first exhibition in 1874 in Paris. The painting was ridiculed by art critic Louis Leroy as he joked about it's titled by saying that he was not "impressed" by it and that he had seen more finish in wallpaper in it's embryonic state. Again I will paint it again for you if you should so wish.

The Mill Pond and Malt Shovel 2011
Description:
This is one of my many paintings of the Mill Pond in Burley in Wharfedale. The direction of the view is south and the painting also includes the rear of the Malt Shovel. The ivy on the rear of the building was removed when it was turned into apartments and the bridge in between it and the pond has a small opening at it's base (middle of the bridge)to allow water in from the local beck to replace the water flowing out of the pond that drove the old mill that has now been turned into a house.

Wells walk bridge in Ilkley (2019)
Description:
In the centre of Ilkley there are two roads. One is called Wells Promenade the other Wells Walk. In between both roads is a slim wooded area with a stream running through it. This painting is one of four painted in the different lights of a summer afternoon. Here we have a bright light that brings out the different colours and combined produce a pleasing to the eye effect and atmosphere and we see a bridge with Wells Walk to the right. We see the path that goes through the wood and the stream.

Calf rock at sunrise, Ilkley Moor (2015)
Description:
One of my paintings from one my many series of the Cow and Calf Rocks. I constantly find these rocks as a source of inspiration. Ilkley Moor is not only famous for it's song, but also for it's magnificent Cow and Calf Rocks left over from the last ice age. These rocks have become a very big tourist attraction over the years with both visitors and climbers even from Victorian times and the rocks bear their names carved into the stone. This painting shows the Calf Rock viewed from the Cow Rock.

summer morning at stepping stones island (2017)
Description:
This is one of the two paintings I have done of this scene. One is a Winter scene, but this painting shows the river Wharfe on a bright summer morning. This particular site has always been a popular play area for the children of Burley in Wharfedale. I have seen old photos of them paddling in the shallow water on the right bank and rock pool fishing in the same place. I painted this painting mainly because of one thing.....the light catching the top of the large tree on the island.

still life with apples and jug (2009)
Description:
I don't usually paint still life paintings so I was particularly surprised to see how well I think this one turned out. Some of the members of Burley Art Club (of which I am president) have asked me in the past how I go about painting such a painting as they are fond of still life themselves and I reply "It's not easy this art lark! Honestly though use your eye, basic shapes and now and again step back and look at your creation. Also practise drawing and ask others what they think".
