Radiance

Title: Radiance
Description: Radiance is a panoramic autumn landscape painting of autumn trees and colours in a radiant forest. It is 16x40x1.5 inches oil on canvas. It was painted ‘wet into wet’ style meaning the canvas was covered in wet paint and oil and then I kept working into to it during one long session. The place that inspired the painting is part of the gardens of Standen House, National Trust property, near East Grinstead in Sussex. If you get the right moment in in Autumn, the trees glow like stained glass windows and walking through them on the crispy leaves is one of the biggest joys you can get from nature, especially if the sun is out. The wide canvas makes the scene look almost holy and cathedral-like and that captures the essence of Autumn for me. It is painted on deep edge canvas, white edges, no frame needed and ready to hang.

Artist Biography:

I am a Sussex based artist who paints large original landscape paintings and seascape paintings in oil on canvas.

My art is painted mostly from memory after having visited somewhere beautiful and are an attempt to capture some of the essence of that place.

I gained a fine art degree from Brighton in 1983 and began my painting career as a portraitist and muralist. However, sometime in the late 90s, after painting my 200th labrador, I realised I was crushingly bored and needed to develop my own painting style and began to paint landscapes and seascapes for my own amusement.

I am inspired by the patterns and movements of nature and animals and eventually developed a painting style that combines traditional painting techniques with more abstract and contemporary techniques.

My artworks evolve from simple ideas, usually after I have taken a walk somewhere. They are expressionistic, impressionist, art deco, art nouveau and something possibly unique to me in the feeling they evoke.

I like to think that paintings have little souls woven into them by artists and that these are what call to a viewer (or not as the case may be) and give a painting presence and desirability.

My goal is to one day paint a place so beautiful I will disappear into it and never be seen again and to create worlds where others can do the same even if only for a little while.
