Wild Souls Wild Wood

Title: Wild Souls Wild Wood
Description: Wild Souls Wild Wood is a large dark, textured oil painting of wild deer stag in a wild wood. It is 36x48x1.5 inches. The painting is very textured impasto and almost Gothic in style and shows a view into a dark forest towards a group of deer. The stag and three female deer stand looking out at us from the top of the painting in a glowing woodland clearing lit by golden yellow light. A purple blue line rises from the bottom centre of the painting and up towards up to the deer where it merges with them. This is a suggestion of the energy that seems to inhabit ancient forests and trees. I find it easy to believe that forests and the animals dwelling in them take care of each other. Although the painting is mostly composed of dark green, purple and blue, contrasted with the yellows, oranges and reds of the trees and deer it still manages to make a room feel cosy. This painting glows and due to the thick paint, it has facets that reflect different colours at different times of the day. Painted on deep edge canvas, edges also dark, no frame needed.

Artist Biography:

I am a Sussex based artist who paints large original landscape paintings and seascape paintings in oil on canvas.

My art is painted mostly from memory after having visited somewhere beautiful and are an attempt to capture some of the essence of that place.

I gained a fine art degree from Brighton in 1983 and began my painting career as a portraitist and muralist. However, sometime in the late 90s, after painting my 200th labrador, I realised I was crushingly bored and needed to develop my own painting style and began to paint landscapes and seascapes for my own amusement.

I am inspired by the patterns and movements of nature and animals and eventually developed a painting style that combines traditional painting techniques with more abstract and contemporary techniques.

My artworks evolve from simple ideas, usually after I have taken a walk somewhere. They are expressionistic, impressionist, art deco, art nouveau and something possibly unique to me in the feeling they evoke.

I like to think that paintings have little souls woven into them by artists and that these are what call to a viewer (or not as the case may be) and give a painting presence and desirability.

My goal is to one day paint a place so beautiful I will disappear into it and never be seen again and to create worlds where others can do the same even if only for a little while.
