Forest Portal

Title: Forest Portal
Description: Forest Portal is a large panoramic oil painting on canvas of a glowing autumn forest clearing with a red deer stag and golden light through trees behind him. The painting brings the viewer out from a dark autumn forest and into a vibrant glowing clearing at the edge of the forest. It looks like a stage set where something is about to happen. A golden stag can be seen waiting between the trees. A portal is an exit or entrance to some other place. I sometimes get anxious in case I accidentally walk off my own time line into another when I walk in woodland such as this. I like this idea as the patches of woodland in England, especially, do have their own distinct atmospheres one to the next. This forest is like a large glowing cathedral where magic happens. The stag is a symbol of spiritual guidance common to many cultures. I made the painting with lots of overlapping layers of transparent colour and these layers reflect different colours when seen from different angles. It is dark but it is also rainbow coloured in a similar way to the reflective wings of a raven. The dark edges are mostly deep purple, blues and green. It is 36x60x2 inches on deep edge canvas, dark edges, no frame needed, ready to hang.

Artist Biography:

I am a Sussex based artist who paints large original landscape paintings and seascape paintings in oil on canvas.

My art is painted mostly from memory after having visited somewhere beautiful and are an attempt to capture some of the essence of that place.

I gained a fine art degree from Brighton in 1983 and began my painting career as a portraitist and muralist. However, sometime in the late 90s, after painting my 200th labrador, I realised I was crushingly bored and needed to develop my own painting style and began to paint landscapes and seascapes for my own amusement.

I am inspired by the patterns and movements of nature and animals and eventually developed a painting style that combines traditional painting techniques with more abstract and contemporary techniques.

My artworks evolve from simple ideas, usually after I have taken a walk somewhere. They are expressionistic, impressionist, art deco, art nouveau and something possibly unique to me in the feeling they evoke.

I like to think that paintings have little souls woven into them by artists and that these are what call to a viewer (or not as the case may be) and give a painting presence and desirability.

My goal is to one day paint a place so beautiful I will disappear into it and never be seen again and to create worlds where others can do the same even if only for a little while.
