Out of the Ether

Title: Out of the Ether
Description: Out of the Ether is a painting of a white egret in flight below a full moon seen through a screen of purple. It is 30x30x1.5 inches. The white egret is a beautiful ethereal bird and is seen here flying over a lake at sunset. Above her is a soft full moon and both she and the moon are reflected in the misty lake beneath her which may have a layer of ice on it. The colours are sunset colours – gold, orange, magenta and purple and a purple glaze has been applied over it. Some was then wiped away to reveal parts of the painting so that you get the impression of it not being quite of this world – hence the title. In the foreground are some spindly twigs and trees which are reminiscent of a winter landscape. The inspiration for this painting was the many winter walks I have taken in Sussex woodland and around areas of ancient millponds where I often see storks and egrets. I find them magical birds and wonder how they manage to stay so white in a muddy English pond. Painted on deep edge canvas, white edges, ready to hang, no frame needed.

Artist Biography:

I am a Sussex based artist who paints large original landscape paintings and seascape paintings in oil on canvas.

My art is painted mostly from memory after having visited somewhere beautiful and are an attempt to capture some of the essence of that place.

I gained a fine art degree from Brighton in 1983 and began my painting career as a portraitist and muralist. However, sometime in the late 90s, after painting my 200th labrador, I realised I was crushingly bored and needed to develop my own painting style and began to paint landscapes and seascapes for my own amusement.

I am inspired by the patterns and movements of nature and animals and eventually developed a painting style that combines traditional painting techniques with more abstract and contemporary techniques.

My artworks evolve from simple ideas, usually after I have taken a walk somewhere. They are expressionistic, impressionist, art deco, art nouveau and something possibly unique to me in the feeling they evoke.

I like to think that paintings have little souls woven into them by artists and that these are what call to a viewer (or not as the case may be) and give a painting presence and desirability.

My goal is to one day paint a place so beautiful I will disappear into it and never be seen again and to create worlds where others can do the same even if only for a little while.
