Gallery About the Artist
'Simple Minds' is an original watercolour painting using Daniel Smith paints on Arches Aquarelle paper. It depicts three giraffes portraits in a row, with a couple of oxpecker birds fluttering around their heads to add a little movement to the composition. This is quite a striking, eye catching painting which grabs attention as soon as anyone walks in the room. Measuring approximately 16.5 x 14 inches, this painting is presented in a white mount within a complimentary distressed silver frame to a total size of about 24 x 21.5 inches, ready to hang.
The Bounty Hunter
'The Bounty Hunter' is a still life watercolour painting with a little extra life added in the form of a nuthatch searching out insects to feed on from within bunches of drying garlic bulbs. This was a very time consuming painting to complete what with all of the intricate details but I think the result was well worth it. I've used my Daniel Smith paints to good effect, choosing rich warm hues and earthy darks. I finished by glazing the entire scene in a watery gold wash to help make it glow. I think this painting could hang anywhere but would particularly suit a dining room or kitchen space, maybe even on a restaurant wall. Measuring 15 x 13.5 inches this watercolour painting is presented in a bright white mount within a rich yew frame with gilt sight edge to a total size of approximately 23 x 22 inches, ready to hang.
'Boy's Toys' is a coloured pencil drawing on Bristol board. A close up portrait of the characterful face of a British Bulldog chewing on tennis balls beside a Danger Mouse toy. As well as my usual high level of detail which can only be obtained by working on Bristol board or a similarly hard and smooth surface, this composition displays a healthy dash of humour too. Nobody has looked at this drawing so far without smiling. I believe it would suit any room in the house regardless of whether you are a dog lover or not. Measuring approximately 15.5 x 11 inches it is presented in a white mount within an antiqued silver gilt frame to a total size of approximately 23 x 19 inches, ready to hang.
Bird In Hand
'Bird In Hand' is an unusual and interesting composition depicting a small parrot laying on it's back within the palm of a human hand. Created with graphite pencils on Arches Cold Pressed watercolour paper it is based on a reference photograph taken by Amelia from the Paint my Photo website although I've used my own hand to enable a greater range of texures in my drawing. Measuring approximately 18 x 8 inches, the size and shape of this artwork is ideal for hanging in an awkward space perhaps above a piece of furniture or under a low ceiling. It is presented in an off white mount within a distressed silver gilt frame to a total size of approximately 25 x 15 inches, ready to hang.
Butter Wouldn't Melt
'Butter Wouldn't Melt' is a small, close up portrait of a lovely little ginger kitten created with coloured pencils on Strathmore series 400 paper. I don't usually do pet portraits but was seduced by the fabulous reference photo of this little one, taken by Lisa Harris from the Paint my Photo website. I found the eyes particularly striking although I have changed the colours for my drawing. Measuring approximately 9.5 x 6.25 inches this drawing is presented in a white mount within a distressed silver gilt frame to a total size of approximately 17 x 14 inches, ready to hang.
'Shadow Falling' is a graphite pencil drawing on Arches CP watercolour paper. A close up portrait of a timber wolf. I have been wanting to create a portrait like this for ages but couldn't find the right reference photo. Then I thought of a method I could use which was to take a photograph, crop it in two, discard one half and then flip the other before joining it back together all in Photoshop. I ended up with a perfectly symmetrical face which I used for reference for this drawing. With the addition of some dramatic lighting I achieved just what I was hoping for, a very striking and haunting portrait which draws the viewer right in. Quite small at just 10.25 x 9.5 inches it is presented in a white mount within a silk finished charcoal black frame with bright silver sight edge to a total size of approximately 18.75 x 18 inches, ready to hang.
'Sierra Spirit' is a close up portrait of a beautiful Iberian wolf created with coloured pencils on Arches cold pressed watercolour paper. I'm so glad to read that these wonderful creatures are making a steady comeback in Northern Portugal and Spain after being hunted almost to extinction, although there is still a way to go before they are safe. About the size and weight of a German Shepherd I think they have become my favourite wild animal, this one in particular resembling my own dog Bonnie in some ways. Measuring approximately 14 x 11 inches this drawing is presented in a white mount within a distressed silver gilt frame which suits the piece perfectly, to a total size of approximately 22 x 18.5 inches, ready to hang.
Tangled Up In Blue
'Tangled Up In Blue' is the third in a 'Beach Life' series and depicts a scene which could be found anywhere along the Suffolk coastline. An inquisitive young cat investigates a tangled mass of ropes, floats and other discarded paraphernalia. The different textures and intricate details of all of the elements in this scene form an interesting composition with plenty to keep the eye occupied before settling on the soft furred kitten. Quite large at 20.5 x 13.5 inches, it is presented in a white mount within a rich yew frame with gilt sight edge to a total size of 29 x 22 inches, ready to hang.
War Is Hell
'War Is Hell' is a relatively large, highly detailed coloured pencil drawing on Strathmore 400 series paper. I used photographs of my own for references, the dog being my mighty Leon and the vintage Harley is one I spotted outside a pub where I was exhibiting a few years ago. The writing on the helmet is a homage to the famous photograph with slogan written by a US soldier and taken circa 1965 in Vietnam, hence the title. I've included the Union Jack flag and several others on Leon's collar as the sentiment is universal. Measuring approximately 19 inches x 15 inches, it is presented in a white mount within a silk finished charcoal black frame with bright silver sight edge to a total size of approximately 27 x 23 inches, ready to hang.
'Domain' is a fairly large, framed, original pastel painting. This composition makes the most of a wonderful landscape beneath a dramatic tumbling sky. The fearsomely alert jaguar is depicted crouched on a fallen dead tree in a field of long grasses but the huge sky and powerful sun's rays do their best to steal the show and contrast interestingly with the intricate detail of the big cat and the dead wood. Measuring approximately 15 inches x 21 inches, this piece is presented in a white mount with a complimentary richly coloured yew frame with a gold sight edge to a total size of about 23.5 x 29.5 inches, ready to hang.
