Spellbound River

Title: Spellbound River
Description: Spellbound River is a large oil painting on canvas, 36x60, inches of two ducks flying over a summer riverbank with flowers and meadows and hills beyond. It is a semi-abstract and contemporary landscape and very colourful which has a late summer in the afternoon feel to it. I wanted it magical and I think that it is, hence the title. It was painted from memory having been inspired by the river Cuck near Alfriston in Sussex. To the left of the painting is a dark curtain of trees and to the right you can see a male and female duck flying over some wild flowers across the river towards where it bends with some South Downs hills visible in the distance. It was a very hot day in August and I have tried to show the bright sunlight contrasting with the shadows and reflections on the river as well as the heat and haze and exuberance of the nature in summer. Living with English weather means that glorious sunny days do not happen as often as we would like so I always try to capture the best ones by painting them so that I can look at them during the long grey days of autumn and winter. It is painted on deep edge canvas, whit edges, ready to hang, no frame needed

Artist Biography:

I am a Sussex based artist who paints large original landscape paintings and seascape paintings in oil on canvas.

My art is painted mostly from memory after having visited somewhere beautiful and are an attempt to capture some of the essence of that place.

I gained a fine art degree from Brighton in 1983 and began my painting career as a portraitist and muralist. However, sometime in the late 90s, after painting my 200th labrador, I realised I was crushingly bored and needed to develop my own painting style and began to paint landscapes and seascapes for my own amusement.

I am inspired by the patterns and movements of nature and animals and eventually developed a painting style that combines traditional painting techniques with more abstract and contemporary techniques.

My artworks evolve from simple ideas, usually after I have taken a walk somewhere. They are expressionistic, impressionist, art deco, art nouveau and something possibly unique to me in the feeling they evoke.

I like to think that paintings have little souls woven into them by artists and that these are what call to a viewer (or not as the case may be) and give a painting presence and desirability.

My goal is to one day paint a place so beautiful I will disappear into it and never be seen again and to create worlds where others can do the same even if only for a little while.
