Song of August

Title: Song of August
Description: Song of August is very large oil painting 72x48x2 inches of a magical summer landscape with birds and flowers by a lake. It has a real impact when seen from a distance as it is the sort of painting you feel you can walk into. The edges are built up of layers of greens, purples and blues like overlapping leaves and foliage and through these leaves you can see a glittering lake and distant trees. To the right are two white egrets who are woven into the landscape or are maybe even being formed by it. In the foreground are an abundance of brightly coloured wildflowers with the sparkling water of the green lake behind and between them. This painting was made by building up many different layers of colour one over the other so that though it is clear what it is, the style itself is abstract and contemporary. It was inspired by many walks I took this summer around the various mill ponds and fishing lakes that are common in the Sussex area. It is also a nod to the huge Monet waterlilies paintings murals which are similarly large and hard to make sense of up close but are very clear from a distance and make you want to be there when you see them. My intention in painting this was to create an impression of August on a sunny day that I could keep forever. It is painted on deep edge canvas so no frame is needed and the edges are dark green to match the painting.

Artist Biography:

I am a Sussex based artist who paints large original landscape paintings and seascape paintings in oil on canvas.

My art is painted mostly from memory after having visited somewhere beautiful and are an attempt to capture some of the essence of that place.

I gained a fine art degree from Brighton in 1983 and began my painting career as a portraitist and muralist. However, sometime in the late 90s, after painting my 200th labrador, I realised I was crushingly bored and needed to develop my own painting style and began to paint landscapes and seascapes for my own amusement.

I am inspired by the patterns and movements of nature and animals and eventually developed a painting style that combines traditional painting techniques with more abstract and contemporary techniques.

My artworks evolve from simple ideas, usually after I have taken a walk somewhere. They are expressionistic, impressionist, art deco, art nouveau and something possibly unique to me in the feeling they evoke.

I like to think that paintings have little souls woven into them by artists and that these are what call to a viewer (or not as the case may be) and give a painting presence and desirability.

My goal is to one day paint a place so beautiful I will disappear into it and never be seen again and to create worlds where others can do the same even if only for a little while.
