Souls of the Ashdown Forest

Title: Souls of the Ashdown Forest
Description: Souls of the Ashdown Forest is a 36x48x1.5 inched oil painting of a view through the trees of the Ashdown Forest towards some deer in the heather. It was inspired by many walks in the area – especially during lock down 2020. You often see deer around here but deer being deer you only get to see them for seconds at a time before they flash their white bum’s at you and vanish into the trees. This particular painting was of a view from one of the clumps of trees in the area looking towards the farmland and heather and heath land beyond. It has been made by building up layers of paint until it has a green gold glow in the first section and colder purples, lilacs and yellow in the spaces between the trees. A deer stag can be seen on the left looking back at us and a string of females can be seen on the right moving off into the distance. The heather of the forest is loosely approximated by using purple which contrasts with the green gold in an interesting way. It is semi abstract and a kind of messy art nouveau in style. It is on deep edge canvas, white edges, ready to hang.

Artist Biography:

I am a Sussex based artist who paints large original landscape paintings and seascape paintings in oil on canvas.

My art is painted mostly from memory after having visited somewhere beautiful and are an attempt to capture some of the essence of that place.

I gained a fine art degree from Brighton in 1983 and began my painting career as a portraitist and muralist. However, sometime in the late 90s, after painting my 200th labrador, I realised I was crushingly bored and needed to develop my own painting style and began to paint landscapes and seascapes for my own amusement.

I am inspired by the patterns and movements of nature and animals and eventually developed a painting style that combines traditional painting techniques with more abstract and contemporary techniques.

My artworks evolve from simple ideas, usually after I have taken a walk somewhere. They are expressionistic, impressionist, art deco, art nouveau and something possibly unique to me in the feeling they evoke.

I like to think that paintings have little souls woven into them by artists and that these are what call to a viewer (or not as the case may be) and give a painting presence and desirability.

My goal is to one day paint a place so beautiful I will disappear into it and never be seen again and to create worlds where others can do the same even if only for a little while.
