Glimpse of April

Title: Glimpse of April
Description: Glimpse of April is a semi abstract oil painting inspired by spring blossom and deer. The inspiration behind it was simply to try and capture that brief moment in April in England when the pink blossom trees bloom. I had been walking around the Knole Park area of Sevenoaks in Kent where a large herd of fallow deer live in the grounds of a stately home. One young deer stood under a blossom tree and flashed her white bottom at me before disappearing into the woods. I liked the fairy tale quality of it and although the painting is a little experimental it does give me a glimpse of that moment – hence the title. It is 30x30x1.5 inches on deep edge canvas (so frame not needed), edges white.

Artist Biography:

I am a Sussex based artist who paints large original landscape paintings and seascape paintings in oil on canvas.

My art is painted mostly from memory after having visited somewhere beautiful and are an attempt to capture some of the essence of that place.

I gained a fine art degree from Brighton in 1983 and began my painting career as a portraitist and muralist. However, sometime in the late 90s, after painting my 200th labrador, I realised I was crushingly bored and needed to develop my own painting style and began to paint landscapes and seascapes for my own amusement.

I am inspired by the patterns and movements of nature and animals and eventually developed a painting style that combines traditional painting techniques with more abstract and contemporary techniques.

My artworks evolve from simple ideas, usually after I have taken a walk somewhere. They are expressionistic, impressionist, art deco, art nouveau and something possibly unique to me in the feeling they evoke.

I like to think that paintings have little souls woven into them by artists and that these are what call to a viewer (or not as the case may be) and give a painting presence and desirability.

My goal is to one day paint a place so beautiful I will disappear into it and never be seen again and to create worlds where others can do the same even if only for a little while.
