River Spell

Title: River Spell
Description: River Spell is a large colourful contemporary oil painting showing a kingfisher flying along a riverbank in summertime. Along the riverbank semi abstract flowers and a few trees compete for attention. The painting is textured and has an atmosphere of a late summer afternoon. It has been built up of several layers which overlap and make the scene ambiguous. I like the idea of worlds overlapping or being able to move from one universe to another and that is what the kingfisher is doing. She is casting a spell and flickering though veils. This is the third in a kingfisher series of paintings I have painted this year and was inspired by the first real life sighing I had of a kingfisher last summer. I am so used to watching wildlife on Countryfile that I get ridiculously excited when I see it for myself. These are gorgeous little birds and the river Ouse, which I was walking along in Sussex, was also beautiful as were the wildflowers that grow along the edges. This is dedicated to fellow walkers and those who are helping our wildlife and landscapes to thrive. It is 36x48x1.5 inches, is on white deep edge canvas, ready to hang, no frame needed.

Artist Biography:

I am a Sussex based artist who paints large original landscape paintings and seascape paintings in oil on canvas.

My art is painted mostly from memory after having visited somewhere beautiful and are an attempt to capture some of the essence of that place.

I gained a fine art degree from Brighton in 1983 and began my painting career as a portraitist and muralist. However, sometime in the late 90s, after painting my 200th labrador, I realised I was crushingly bored and needed to develop my own painting style and began to paint landscapes and seascapes for my own amusement.

I am inspired by the patterns and movements of nature and animals and eventually developed a painting style that combines traditional painting techniques with more abstract and contemporary techniques.

My artworks evolve from simple ideas, usually after I have taken a walk somewhere. They are expressionistic, impressionist, art deco, art nouveau and something possibly unique to me in the feeling they evoke.

I like to think that paintings have little souls woven into them by artists and that these are what call to a viewer (or not as the case may be) and give a painting presence and desirability.

My goal is to one day paint a place so beautiful I will disappear into it and never be seen again and to create worlds where others can do the same even if only for a little while.
