Out of the Forest

Title: Out of the Forest
Description: Out of the Forest is a large oil painting, 36x48x1.5 inches, of a view through the trees of the Ashdown Forest in Sussex to the heathland and fields beyond. It was inspired by the fact that I live very close to the forest and often walk there. The reality of this painting is a little strange. I wanted it to contrast being ‘realistic’ as well a little abstract and have therefore experimented by adding extra shapes and layers and hinting at other things but without losing the overall feeling of a warm golden space under the pine trees contrasted against the colder colours, blues and green of the landscape beyond. To the right of the painting a small deer stag can be seen looking back at us. He is quite well hidden. As a regular walker, I am fascinated by how much landscapes change at different times of day and in different seasons and wanted to try and capture this ever changing reality. I also enjoy spotting the deer who are always there but are clever at hiding. I like the ambiguousness of this painting. It is inviting and yet odd and I find it much more interesting than a traditional landscape painting. It feels like a place that may have a portal to some other universe… White edges, does not need a frame, ready to hang.

Artist Biography:

I am a Sussex based artist who paints large original landscape paintings and seascape paintings in oil on canvas.

My art is painted mostly from memory after having visited somewhere beautiful and are an attempt to capture some of the essence of that place.

I gained a fine art degree from Brighton in 1983 and began my painting career as a portraitist and muralist. However, sometime in the late 90s, after painting my 200th labrador, I realised I was crushingly bored and needed to develop my own painting style and began to paint landscapes and seascapes for my own amusement.

I am inspired by the patterns and movements of nature and animals and eventually developed a painting style that combines traditional painting techniques with more abstract and contemporary techniques.

My artworks evolve from simple ideas, usually after I have taken a walk somewhere. They are expressionistic, impressionist, art deco, art nouveau and something possibly unique to me in the feeling they evoke.

I like to think that paintings have little souls woven into them by artists and that these are what call to a viewer (or not as the case may be) and give a painting presence and desirability.

My goal is to one day paint a place so beautiful I will disappear into it and never be seen again and to create worlds where others can do the same even if only for a little while.
