Title: Epiphany
Description: Epiphany is a large oil painting 40x40x1.5 inches in very thick Van Gogh type paint of a dark forest and a beautiful sunny clearing beyond it. The trees are dark but with patches of colour where the light hits them and the path also has intense patches of light showing the purples, pinks and gold of fallen leaves. The path leads from a very dark woodland out into a bright summer clearing where a group of Roe deer are enjoying the sun in a field of wildflowers and grass. One of them has seen us though and she has an epiphany at the same time as the viewer does. The inspiration for this painting is the happiness I feel when I come out of a path through a forest in to a clearing. I always panic a bit in woodland as I have no sense of direction at all but I love woodland anyway. I find going from darkness into lightness a very uplifting experience and am always happy when deer are present as they often are around Sussex. The painting is on deep edge canvas with the edges dark green - the colour of the dark bits of the woodland. Although it looks very dark and slightly Gothic, it is in fact a riot of colour. Painted in impasto paint, expressionist and contemporary in style. It is ready to hang and does not need a frame.

Artist Biography:

I am a Sussex based artist who paints large original landscape paintings and seascape paintings in oil on canvas.

My art is painted mostly from memory after having visited somewhere beautiful and are an attempt to capture some of the essence of that place.

I gained a fine art degree from Brighton in 1983 and began my painting career as a portraitist and muralist. However, sometime in the late 90s, after painting my 200th labrador, I realised I was crushingly bored and needed to develop my own painting style and began to paint landscapes and seascapes for my own amusement.

I am inspired by the patterns and movements of nature and animals and eventually developed a painting style that combines traditional painting techniques with more abstract and contemporary techniques.

My artworks evolve from simple ideas, usually after I have taken a walk somewhere. They are expressionistic, impressionist, art deco, art nouveau and something possibly unique to me in the feeling they evoke.

I like to think that paintings have little souls woven into them by artists and that these are what call to a viewer (or not as the case may be) and give a painting presence and desirability.

My goal is to one day paint a place so beautiful I will disappear into it and never be seen again and to create worlds where others can do the same even if only for a little while.
