The Guide

Title: The Guide
Description: The Guide is a 30x30x1.5 inches oil painting on canvas in of a stag in an enchanted forest with Celtic legend echoes. The painting style is abstract art nouveau. The stag stands in a doorway between this realm and another and looks back to see if anyone is following. The doorway which was woven tightly closed has been loosened and the light of a new possibilities beckon beyond it. It is a painting about hope and is dedicated to those who wish to know more about life and are not afraid to keep their minds open and look rather than just accept everything their are told to believe. The colours range from purples to pinks to yellows and gold. Although the back ground is abstract, you can still see this is a forest and the stag knows something we don't. Deer are thought of as spiritual guides in many cultures. This one is no different. It is painted on deep edge canvas, white edges, ready to hang, no frame needed.

Artist Biography:

I am a Sussex based artist who paints large original landscape paintings and seascape paintings in oil on canvas.

My art is painted mostly from memory after having visited somewhere beautiful and are an attempt to capture some of the essence of that place.

I gained a fine art degree from Brighton in 1983 and began my painting career as a portraitist and muralist. However, sometime in the late 90’s, after painting my 200th labrador, I realised I was crushingly bored and needed to develop my own painting style and began to paint landscapes and seascapes for my own amusement.

I am inspired by the patterns and movements of nature and animals and eventually developed a painting style that combines traditional painting techniques with more abstract and contemporary techniques.

My artworks evolve from simple ideas, usually after I have taken a walk somewhere. They are expressionistic, impressionist, art deco, art nouveau and something possibly unique to me in the feeling they evoke.

I like to think that paintings have ‘little souls’ woven into them by artist’s and that these are what call to a viewer (or not as the case may be) and give a painting presence and desirability.

My goal is to one day paint a place so beautiful I will disappear into it and never be seen again and to create worlds where others can do the same – even if only for a little while.
