Title: The Watchers in the Forest - a very large oil painting of a woodland p
Description: The watchers in the forest is a very large original oil painting - 48x48x2 inches showing a walk through a rainbow forest with watching deer. The painting depicts a very vibrant woodland path that invites the viewer into it and because it is a large painting, does it quite effectively. The path leads through dark trees to the edge of the forest where there is a clearing that is so bright you cannot see what is in it. But whatever is in it, it is something you really want to be there. At the edge of the forest with the light behind them are deer and stags. They watch and wait as deer do. The paint is very thick and was made by building many thick layers of paint over each other over several months. The dark colour in not black but is a series of dark greens, blues, purples and magenta which can be seen changing as the sun moves around the room it is in. The contrast between the dark and light colours makes the painting shimmer like a stained glass window. This theme is one I come back to often, partly because I walk in alot of forests and see deer in them, and partly because forests thrill me and terrify me in equal measure. I often feel I will find something wonderful on coming out of a forest - if I do mange to get out of it. It feels like life - part danger - part thrill but always interesting...

Artist Biography:

I am a Sussex based artist who paints large original landscape paintings and seascape paintings in oil on canvas.

My art is painted mostly from memory after having visited somewhere beautiful and are an attempt to capture some of the essence of that place.

I gained a fine art degree from Brighton in 1983 and began my painting career as a portraitist and muralist. However, sometime in the late 90s, after painting my 200th labrador, I realised I was crushingly bored and needed to develop my own painting style and began to paint landscapes and seascapes for my own amusement.

I am inspired by the patterns and movements of nature and animals and eventually developed a painting style that combines traditional painting techniques with more abstract and contemporary techniques.

My artworks evolve from simple ideas, usually after I have taken a walk somewhere. They are expressionistic, impressionist, art deco, art nouveau and something possibly unique to me in the feeling they evoke.

I like to think that paintings have little souls woven into them by artists and that these are what call to a viewer (or not as the case may be) and give a painting presence and desirability.

My goal is to one day paint a place so beautiful I will disappear into it and never be seen again and to create worlds where others can do the same even if only for a little while.
