Something Changes- a sussex autumn landscape with deer

Title: Something Changes- a sussex autumn landscape with deer
Description: 30 x 30 x 1.5 inches semi abstract landscape painting of two deer in an an autumn wood. The background of this autumn inspired landscape was painted in a loose, abstract style with a few trees and leaves hinted at and the idea of golden light coming through trees. Some of the beams of light shine onto a clearing where a red deer stag and a doe have just appeared. I wanted to try and recreate the ethereal nature of deer as well as the experience of a walk in an autumn forest. It is something many people love to do as there is an atmosphere under trees that is both reassuring and a little melancholy in the autumn. Around the deer I used some bright gold yellow which adds to the magical element of the painting. The colours are warm and autumnal and are reflecting what I see around me right now in the Ashdown Forest area of Sussex (October 2018). Painted on deep edge canvas - edges white, no frame needed.

Artist Biography:

I am a Sussex based artist who paints large original landscape paintings and seascape paintings in oil on canvas.

My art is painted mostly from memory after having visited somewhere beautiful and are an attempt to capture some of the essence of that place.

I gained a fine art degree from Brighton in 1983 and began my painting career as a portraitist and muralist. However, sometime in the late 90’s, after painting my 200th labrador, I realised I was crushingly bored and needed to develop my own painting style and began to paint landscapes and seascapes for my own amusement.

I am inspired by the patterns and movements of nature and animals and eventually developed a painting style that combines traditional painting techniques with more abstract and contemporary techniques.

My artworks evolve from simple ideas, usually after I have taken a walk somewhere. They are expressionistic, impressionist, art deco, art nouveau and something possibly unique to me in the feeling they evoke.

I like to think that paintings have ‘little souls’ woven into them by artist’s and that these are what call to a viewer (or not as the case may be) and give a painting presence and desirability.

My goal is to one day paint a place so beautiful I will disappear into it and never be seen again and to create worlds where others can do the same – even if only for a little while.
