Mick Blakey

Artist Biography:

My name is Mick Blakey, and I specialise in Fine Art black & white photography. I have been a professional landscape photographer for the past 5 years based in Cornwall, where I run my own gallery in Charlestown with my artist wife, Sarah. My specialist subject is capturing the beautiful seascapes, and landscapes of Cornwall, using the creative medium of black & white, and slow exposure photography. Mainly self taught, I am influenced by many great photographers both past and present. My techniques have been developed over a number of years, and I have found working in black & white gives me far more creative freedom than working in colour.
The process of capturing my seascape images starts with scouting locations, where I study the light and tides to establish the best times to photograph. This is always best I find without my camera, so that I can establish a feel for the place, and visualise compositions. Once completed, I then plan my photo shoots around weather forecasts and tide times.
Once I have captured images that I feel have potential, I will spend several days processing the photographs ready for print. This is a very creative process, and well worth spending some time over. Finally, all the prints are produced by me to a very high standard, using top quality inks and paper.
I love controlling the process of my work from capture to print, and finally selling work to collectors who will hopefully have many years of pleasure viewing the artwork.
