A Summer Place

Title: A Summer Place
Description: A large 36 x 48 x 1.5 inches semi abstract original oil painting of a summer landscape. I called it 'a summer place' after a song I used to love as a little kid - I can hear this song when I look at the painting. The landscape shows three swallows swooping over the scene with red reeds or poppies, a lake, some pine trees and the sea. It is art nouveau and decorative but also quite painterly and abstract. I painted it after a visit to the Cuckmere river in Sussex and tried to capture the gorgeous ecstatic enthusiasm of the wildlife and birds there as they follow the river to the sea. I was quite happy to be there myself :-)

Artist Biography:

I am a Sussex based artist who paints large original landscape paintings and seascape paintings in oil on canvas.

My art is painted mostly from memory after having visited somewhere beautiful and are an attempt to capture some of the essence of that place.

I gained a fine art degree from Brighton in 1983 and began my painting career as a portraitist and muralist. However, sometime in the late 90’s, after painting my 200th labrador, I realised I was crushingly bored and needed to develop my own painting style and began to paint landscapes and seascapes for my own amusement.

I am inspired by the patterns and movements of nature and animals and eventually developed a painting style that combines traditional painting techniques with more abstract and contemporary techniques.

My artworks evolve from simple ideas, usually after I have taken a walk somewhere. They are expressionistic, impressionist, art deco, art nouveau and something possibly unique to me in the feeling they evoke.

I like to think that paintings have ‘little souls’ woven into them by artist’s and that these are what call to a viewer (or not as the case may be) and give a painting presence and desirability.

My goal is to one day paint a place so beautiful I will disappear into it and never be seen again and to create worlds where others can do the same – even if only for a little while.
