In His Element
Description:
In His Element is a vibrant semi abstract oil painting of a peacock blending into in a magical bluebell wood. It is 36x30x1.5 inches. The peacock is looking to his right under the green spring woodland trees. His tail is spread out around him and is sinking into the lush carpet of bluebells. His colours match the scene beautifully which is why he is in his element. The painting style is semi abstract, slightly art nouveau and is depicted in an exuberant, loose and blurry way so that it seems to shimmer. The vertical layers and lines are like a curtain that present different aspects of the same scene simultaneously. The concept of the painting was simply the idea of seeing a peacock in a bluebell wood. I would like to see it! Peacocks, for me, represent something exotic and gorgeous and strange and bluebells are equally exotic and gorgeous and strange. Painted on 3D canvas, edges white, ready to hang, no frame needed.

Chasing a Memory
Description:
Chasing a Memory is a painting of one of my own memories from some other lifetime. It shows a figure and a dog by a river in summer. It is 30x30x1.5 inches. This is a very real and happy memory to me and so, in a rare event, I decided to paint it. The actual building is a real one near the Ouse river outside Lewes. This is not the place I lived but was a good enough place to paint to represent the memory. Hence it is called Chasing a Memory. The viewer is transported into this landscape with a series of random spirals, spots and lines which gives it an energy I am very pleased with. It is predominantly green but you can see the yellow fields, the red brick of the building and the blue sky in the centre as well as wildflowers which grow at the edge of the river on both sides. Follow the Dream
Description:
A golden, vibrantly coloured panoramic oil painting of the path through an ancient woodland in autumn. 40x16x1.5 inches. The painting technique is blurred and impasto and has a golden glow to it that changes throughout the day depending on the light. This painting almost vibrates with the promise of good things around the next bend. The inspiration was lots of woodland walks taken in autumn in the East Sussex area where the paths through the trees are often well worn and very old. Many were droversâ paths used for herding animals and the echoes of the past are very strong in some of them. I tried to capture the feeling of anticipation and hope of revelation that I often get when around trees and ancient forests. The title refers to the idea that it is a good idea to dream and that you may find what you are looking for around the next bend⦠Dedicated to nature conservationists everywhere. Painted on 3D canvas. Somewhere in an Autumn Clearing
Description:
This oil painting is 40x40x1.5 inches and shows a glowing autumn landscape with two swallows playing in a clearing. It is semi abstract in style and painted using techniques that allow the viewer a glimpse of a little magical universe. The energy and the drama of an autumn clearing and trees is shown in the flow lines and blurred edges and other whimsical flourishes. The colours range through purple, blue, magenta, orange and golden yellow. The two swallows are swooping and diving in a clearing beyond a tree on the left and a patch of golden green meadow and more trees beyond. The sun is shining and the swallows are having a last meal before they fly south from England for the winter. The painting was inspired by the Wadhurst area of Sussex which has many rolling meadows and crevices and patches of woodland and streams where magical things take place if you just take care to look⦠(which I do!) She Dreams, a deer abstract
Description:
She Dreams is a painting of a delicate female fallow deer in a semi-abstract landscape. It is 36x30 inches. The deer stands to the left having just emerged from a birch wood. There is a lake and mountains behind her and the sun above. The style is semi-abstract art nouveau but the deer is realistic against her magical landscape. The colours range through golden yellow, orange, pink, purples and white. Though I know deer may not be deep thinkers, they are, nevertheless, beautiful and mysterious animals and have the ability to enchant me no matter how often I come across them. This painting was inspired by a little deer I found half way up a hill last summer. She stood and stared at me for 2 minutes until finally vanishing into a patch of woodland. Out of the Blue, a blue abstract deer painting
Description:
Out of the Blue is a large blue abstract painting with two female deer emerging from a beautiful blue universe. It is 40x40x1.5 inches. This is an unusual painting as it appears to be mostly blue. However, when the light changes, you will see many other colours ranging from pinks, purples, yellows and tans that only show when viewed from different angles - almost like the iridescent feather of a bird. The inspiration for the painting was simply to pay tribute to the beauty of female fallow deer but developed into something more abstract as more layers of paint were added. It is highly textured and hints at a woodland that the deer are coming from. I like to think that deer are magical beings and the intensity of the blue adds to that feeling. Autumn Magic
Description:
Autumn Magic is a large semi abstract autumn inspired oil painting which shows a glowing path through vibrantly coloured autumn trees. It has a magical and enticing feeling to it. It is 60x36x2 inches. The painting was made after many walks I took in and around Sussex during November 2023. The sun is low at this time of year and the beams of light shine through at an angle onto the greens, golds, magentas and oranges of the leaves casting everything around with a magical sheen. The feeling of the end of the path is of a revelation about to made and I hope I captured the sense of anticipation about what might be around the next bend in the path⦠(feel free to add what you think should be there).

The Ancient Spell
Description:
The Ancient Spell is a semi abstract magical landscape painting of the view through a woodland to a ridge of hills beyond. It is 36x30x1.5 inches oil on canvas. Under the trees you can see a hint of foxgloves and other wildflowers and the leaves of the trees are glowing and verdant. In the middle of the ridge of hills beyond there is a bump on the horizon that is actually the clump of trees on Chanctonbury Ring -an iron age fort on the South Downs. The is an actual place I found whilst walking though farmland in June. It was a warm day and nature was in abundance with wildflowers and fields and patches of woodland all around. There was an atmosphere in this particular wood that seemed quite ancient and very welcoming which is why the painting appears to show portals and strange shapes hinting at an element of magic. The Thin Place Beckons
Description:
The Thin Place Beckons is a very large semi-abstract original oil painting showing deer gathering beyond a lake in a heart shaped forest at twilight. It is 48x48x1.5 inches. It was made with liberal amounts of white, golden yellow, peach and purple paint with cyan blue for accent. The inspiration was the definition of the word âthin placeâ which is a Celtic expression for a place that stands between two universes. This is an idea I have always loved and the deer appear often in my paintings as in other folklore they are regarded as harbingers or guides between worlds. Because the paint is multilayered and oil colours do change quite dramatically in different light, (something that delighted me when I saw it in this painting), it will go from muted neutral colours to luminous sunset ones at different times of the day. I am satisfied I caught some of the magic I was trying to catch in this painting and hope that whoever buys it will have magic too.
