Abstracted And Expressionless in Whitby
I like this view through the cafe window looking up at the abbey monastery on the cliff top above the old town of Whitby in North Yorkshire. It gave me the opportunity to incorporate a still-life, people and landscape and to try and tell a little story all in one go. Have the people outside just finished the meal inside? If so, why are they going in different directions or are they together at all? The idea for the title came from the young lady in the Mondrian style dress and the man with a faraway look on his face, and I set it in Whitby as it is one of my favourite places. It is painted in oils on a deep box canvas with the painting continuing around the sides so no framing is required.
In this painting I tried to approach the subject of a traditional still life in a slightly different manner by arranging the elements in an unusual way to try and inject a bit of life into what can be a somewhat tired format. It is painted in oils on canvas and is ready for you to frame to your tastes.
